| Architecture for Humanity is designing like we give a damn in communities around the world. Along with our project partners, we've cut the ribbon on a school in Peru and broken ground on two new projects in Haiti. Our work in Haiti will get a boost from Artist for Haiti's record-breaking art auction last night. What's more, Architecture for Humanity was moving sustainable solutions forward at Clinton Global Initiative this week, where we met with dignitaries including President Martelly and President Clinton. In other big news, we've announced the acquisition of Worldchanging. Feel free to spread the word. Judging by social networks, folks are excited and we even got a nice congrats from the Office of Al Gore. Here at HQ, we're all a-twitter as we finalize the second edition of our book, Design Like You Give a Damn, now on pre-sale! Want to experience that power in person and meet some of the book contributors? This year's Design Like You Give a Damn: LIVE! will be taking New York City by storm again next month. This event is part of AIA NY's month-long Archtober series. It's not to be missed, nor are the updates and job opportunities packed into this edition of our monthly newsletter...Director of Operations, HR Coordinator, and Web Developer anyone? Read on. Students Rebuild Haiti Schools update Ring beams, elevated slabs, bamboo screens and high water tables. Almost sounds like a fast food menu, but rest assured, this is the latest progress report from the Haiti School Initiative. Besides, our crew has plenty of better things to eat... Happy Hearts Fund & ING School Reconstruction Program Ribbon-Cutting at Maria Auxiliadora School in Ica, Peru There were a lot of reasons to celebrate as construction was completed at Maria Auxiliadora School. Japan: Tohoku Rebuilding Program Build Back Better Tohoku Deadline in Two Weeks 「よりよい東北を」プログラム締め切りまであと2週間. We have funding to build innovative community facilities in response to the earthquake and tsunami. We're looking to fund community building projects from NGOs, local groups and/or individuals that are partnered with architectural professionals. The deadline is in two weeks. Submit your idea soon! Artist Vik Muniz Collaborates with Paper Cranes for Japan The first folks to order Muniz's "Large Paper Crane" posters are starting to receive giant poster rolls in (on?) their mailboxes. If you haven't heard, Vik collaborated this summer with Students Rebuild and thousands of paper cranes folded by youth around the world to support rebuilding in Tohoku, and the results are...well, awe-inspiring. Check it out– a poster can be yours for $30 (within the US), and proceeds go back to our work in Japan. GAMECHANGERS Game On (and Traffic Off) in Guatemala City Futsala, a.k.a. street football, is temporarily turning car space into public space with the recent completion of two pitches. Another awesome example of what a little paint, a lot of creativity, and major inspiration can accomplish. On the Ground in New Delhi Architecture for Humanity is excited to award another GAMECHANGERS grant to Magic Bus, an India-based organization that empowers children, youth and communities in the areas of education, gender, health, leadership + livelihood through sports for development. Chapter News Congratulations to our Sioux Falls chapter, recipient of our August micro grant. Check out the winning garden shelter project and all August applications. Congratulations to our Dhaka chapter for being the successful recipient of the July micro grant. We welcome two new chapters to our greater network: Tokyo, our first official Japan chapter, and Spartanburg, South Carolina. Be on the lookout for their upcoming activities and projects. Our collaborative efforts with the Karachi chapter and the Karachi Relief Trust to rebuild two villages destroyed by the 2010 floods in the Sindh province are complete. Find more information about this amazing undertaking and view the chapter's projects in the lower Punjab and Balochistan provinces. The New York City chapter is collaborating with the Myrtle Avenue Redevelopment Corporation to revive an unused track of land under the BQE. Calling all volunteers! In support of local design and the chapter micro grant program, we're conducting our first chapter-wide fund raising campaign. Now through early next week, all donations will help chapter projects in any stage of design development or construction.
