| | | | Dear 'graciela', Welcome to Voices! Friends of the Earth groups around the world have made a strong start in 2013. We have continued to speak truth to power; we have challenged assumptions and exposed environmental and social injustices through our reports, advocacy campaigns and media work. We welcomed the wonderful news of the release of the prisoners in Barillas, Guatemala, and wish to extend our thanks to all of you who supported this action and aided their eventual release. Even as we celebrate some victories, we have been striving to find new ways to prevent and curtail abuses. Our human rights defenders' programme has been lamentably busy in recent weeks: this is a fitting reminder that we must move forward with unflagging fortitude and solidarity to tackle today's urgent environmental and social issues. In solidarity, Jagoda Munic Chair Friends of the Earth International | Human Rights Defenders' Programme In December we received the excellent news that justice had prevailed in Guatemala when the prisoners of Barillas were finally released. While we are delighted with the outcome and thrilled with the wonderful support this action received, our thoughts are with the people who were wrongly imprisoned and their families who are still suffering the consequences, as many of them have lost their jobs because of all this trouble. Watch the video of the FoEI solidarity tour in Guatemala and El Salvador. In recent weeks we have worked to enhance visibility around a number of cases. In Indonesia, the executive director of WALHI (Friends of the Earth Indonesia) South Sumatra remains in prison, unjustly detained following mistreatment and arrest during an environmental protest. Odey Oyama, a prominent environmental activist in Nigeria, was forced into hiding when intimidation against him and his family became unbearable. We have shown our solidarity with the Stop the Wall campaign by demanding the immediate release of twenty-nine year old activist Hassan Yasser Karajeh. Finally, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the shooting of Cícero Guedes, rural worker and activist of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (Via Campesina) of Brazil, who was murdered by gunmen on January 25 near the Cambahyba sugar-cane field, in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. | Less is more: resource efficiency through waste collection, recycling and reuse The European Union currently landfills and incinerates 60% of municipal waste. Valuable materials which could be recycled or re-used are being thrown away as rubbish, contributing to demand for more raw materials. In the case of textiles, for example, Europeans discard 5.8 million tonnes every year, with 75% going to landfill or incineration and only 25% being recycled. This report concludes that in order to move to a zero-waste Europe, higher recycling targets need to be accompanied with targets for reuse and waste prevention. The Scottish company has been denounced as 'cowboys' to a Parliamentary enquiry. Their oil spill response plan is woefully inadequate, if not down right laughable! Find out more about the background.

They are vowing to do whatever it takes to save the Mabira forest and other natural resources from unjustifiable degradation. They are accusing the president of resurrecting the Mabira debate to divert Ugandans from discussing prevailing national concerns including huge corruption scandals, especially in the Prime Minister's Office. Together with Global Witness, they published a report on Cameroon's engagement in the EU's FLEGT agreement (PDF) with Cameroon on illegal logging in October 2012, and on 25 January they hosted a workshop examining lessons learned about illegal logging during the four years of the project on forest governance GTF (Gouvernance Transparence Forestière). They also co-published a report advocating reform of the legal regime for large-scale land transfers in Central Africa (PDF) - only available in French. | Find out more about…Friends of the Earth Mozambique/Justiçia Ambiental! Friends of the Earth Mozambique/ JA! was founded in the late 1990s by a group of friends who were concerned about the manner in which Mozambique was developing in the unregulated global economy. In particular, we were concerned that our leaders were uncritically adopting a pattern of destructive foreign-investment-driven industrial development.
