Towards a Lighter Burden: A Small Step

Bright jerry cans lined up near communal taps and wells, or being carried by women and children on their heads and backs: these are common sights in rural areas across the world.

Square and unwieldy, jerry cans are originally designed to package oil, not to carry water. But millions of women have to: 69% of them suffer from recurrent neck pain, 38% from back pain.

There are some improved designs around, but we need many more ideas. Late last year, TheWaterChannel had announced a competition calling for new design concepts. We received numerous entries, including a number of great ideas.

After much discussions and disagreements, our panel of judges picked the 'Water Bag' and the 'Water Body Pack' as the two top entries. Many congratulations to the winners- Mihiret Brook (Water Bag) and Abel Assefa, Abel G/Hanna, Alpha Yacob, Earmias Almaw, Kidus Wubshet (Water Body Pack)!
