Today is World Refugee Day, a day to remember the thousands of families who are forced to flee violence and conflict every day. Children are taken away from everything they have ever known, families are separated, friends will never see each other again. Refugees are on the move because they cannot stay. The way is full of fear, tears and hunger, the trauma will likely stay forever, but they are moved by the hope of arriving somewhere safe. On this day of awareness and solidarity, I would like to share a poem, written by Tom, a WFP supporter. How it started, your fleeing I mean When you are young, and you have your own bed You know it's a place where you lay down your head. But what if your Mum comes and pulls at your toe And says now is the time to get up and go? What do you take? You can't take the bed Your pillow, maybe Or your favorite "Ted". Then what can you do? But run after your Mum Down streets once familiar But now dark and strange And frighteningly still. What has gone wrong? Where are your friends? "Come on," calls your Mum, "Don't dawdle or cry." "We have to keep going or surely we'll die!" That's how it started Your fleeing I mean Onward and on always you run Trying, desperately hard, to keep up with your Mum. - Tom Roach (Canada, 2019) The story of this poem could have happened in Syria. In South Sudan. In Myanmar. In Somalia. In Afghanistan. In any one of the 21 countries where WFP is working to save people from the hunger caused by conflict and insecurity. But while thousands are fleeing violence every day, you are one of the millions standing with them on the other side. One of the people who will fight for their human rights, their dignity, and ensure they do not go hungry. Thank you for standing with refugees. With hope, Clara World Food Programme |
