UN Environment Programme: Urgent climate action NOW

Your November Briefing

As time runs out to address the climate emergency, here's an update on the latest efforts to limit global temperature rise.

In depth

UN climate talks to focus on finance

World leaders and negotiators are in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29). Always a critical moment for taking stock of global progress, this year's sessions will discuss strategies for channeling the necessary billions of dollars to developing nations dealing with the crisis.

UNEP at COP29  will focus on finance, adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage among other issues.

New reports call for emission cuts and adaptation funding

UNEP's latest scientific reports show that countries are falling short on emissions targets and urgently need to boost climate adaptation efforts.

The Emissions Gap Report warns that global temperatures could rise by a catastrophic 2.6–3.1°C this century without immediate and substantial cuts to greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, citing wildfires, drought, floods, and heatwaves, UNEP chief Inger Andersen said, "Come hell and high water, inaction on climate adaption is no longer an option" at the launch of the Adaptation Gap Report.

Final round of global talks on plastic treaty

"Plastic pollution is all around us and even inside us – from our seas to our blood & our brains," cited UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres ahead of this month's session in the Republic of Korea. He urged negotiators to "agree on a global treaty to end plastic pollution – once & for all," emphasizing that an ambitious, credible and just agreement is the only way.
